About
This is the traditional form of massage, which you may be familiar with. The therapist uses long, gliding strokes, along with deeper circular motions. This form of massage emphasizes relaxation, and the environment will be set up to maximize your peace and tranquility.
Swedish massage aims to improve the circulation of both blood and lymph through the body. The long strokes are performed in the direction of the heart. The aim is to address any stagnant fluids that may have accumulated in various parts of the body, helping to return them to the circulation. In addition, the therapist may use passive movements of joints in order to release tension and further help to promote the circulation of fluids.
Traditionally, a Swedish massage is usually not focused on a particular part of the body, but rather addresses the entire body. However, modern Swedish massage can be customized to the needs of the client. If you’re having problems in a particular part of the body, you should tell your massage therapist so that this can be addressed.
FAQS
Will the massage therapist use oil or lotion?
In general, yes. Because Swedish massage uses long strokes that glide across the skin, some type of oil or lotion is required in order to allow the therapist’s hands to glide smoothly across the client’s skin. Without this, the friction could be very uncomfortable. If you’re sensitive or allergic to a particular type of lotion or oil, please let your massage therapist know. She does have several different types, so she can choose the one that would work best for your skin.
How deep of a touch will the massage therapist use?
While all massages here at Chester Chiropractic Center are tailored to the client’s comfort level, the Swedish massage generally doesn’t use as deep a level of touch as the other massage techniques. It’s primarily designed for relaxation, moving fluids around the body, and releasing any tension held in the tissues, and a very deep touch is generally not required to achieve those objectives.
What if I fall asleep?
A Swedish massage is designed for relaxation, so people do sometimes fall asleep. Your massage therapist will not be offended at all! In fact, falling asleep during a massage is actually a compliment to her ability to help you relax. During the time you’re asleep, you’ll still be receiving all of the physical benefits of the massage, and you’ll notice that your body feels different when you wake up. If you start to feel yourself drift off, trying to force yourself to stay awake will tend to make you feel anxious. Instead, just allow yourself to relax and enjoy the experience, and know that it’s okay if you do fall asleep!
